This summer, we have the pleasure of hosting Professor Patricia Sloane-White (Professor of Anthropology; Chair of Women & Gender Studies, University of Delaware) in two events in the CSEAS Gender Seminar Series 2023. These are organized in conjunction with the CSEAS Gender Equality Promotion Committee, with the support of the Kyoto University Research Coordination Alliance (KURCA).
On the 4th of July, Patricia-sensei delivered a lecture on her research entitled “Gendering Sharia in the Muslim Workplace: Corporate Islam in Malaysia”, based on the long-term ethnographic research she has done on Malay corporate culture over the past 30 years.
The following week, on the 11th of July, Patricia-sensei discussed “Gender Issues in Academia” with a talk entitled “Growing a Strong Department of Women and Gender Studies”. In this seminar, she brought interesting insights on the origins of Women & Gender Studies at the University of Delaware, and the changing ways in which it is taught to the current generation of students facing a different set of struggles compared to the pioneering women who birthed the centre.
Both seminars engaged not only with gender studies as a discipline, but also addressed particular challenges female and non-binary students, faculty, and researchers face in academia. We hope that the CSEAS Gender Studies Seminar Series will bring gender even more to the forefront of Kyoto University’s and CSEAS’s research agenda.
