I am a social anthropologist working on marriage and intimacy in the Malay world and Muslim Southeast Asia.

I am currently a Postdoctoral Fellow for the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), hosted by the Centre for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS) at Kyoto University (2021-2023).

Before moving to Japan, I was Chercheuse Postdoctoral (Postdoctoral Researcher) at the Centre Asie du Sud-Est (Southeast Asia Center, CASE), École des hautes études en sciences sociales (School of Advanced Studies in Social Sciences, EHESS) in Paris, France (2020-2021).

Prior to that, I held a joint appointment as a Visiting Fellow in the Program on Law & Society in the Muslim World at Harvard Law School (2019-2020), and an Evans Fellow on Southeast Asia at the Department of Social Anthropology, University of Cambridge (2019-2021).

I completed my PhD in Social Anthropology under the supervision of Dr. Perveez Mody at Queens’ College, Cambridge in 2018. My doctoral research was based on 14 months of fieldwork in Malaysia and Southern Thailand, where I studied intimacy, cross-border marriage, and polygyny.

After taking a brief hiatus from academia to travel through East Africa, the Middle East, and Australia, I returned to Europe in the summer of 2018 to begin my postdoctoral research career in Leiden as an Affiliated Fellow at the Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian & Caribbean Studies (KITLV).

This was followed by a Research Fellowship at the International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS) in Leiden (2018-2019), with a two-month attachment as Chercheuse Invitée (Guest Researcher) at the Collège d’Études Mondiales – Fondation Maison des Sciences de l’Homme in Paris (summer 2019).

I hold a Bachelor of Arts (First Class Honours) in Anthropology & French from the University of Western Australia, with a semester of exchange at l’Institut d’Études Politiques de Paris (Sciences Po Paris).

I am a native of Johor, Malaysia, with a nomadic upbringing in Sri Lanka, Ghana, Guinea, and Bangladesh.
