“Knowledge in Islamic Courts: Evidence; Proof; Procedure” – Islamic Law Workshop in Rabat (14-15 May 2025)

On 14-15 May 2025, Dr. Ari Schriber (Marie Skłodowska Curie Fellow, Utrecht University) and I co-organized a workshop entitled “Knowledge in Islamic Courts: Evidence, Proof, Procedure” at the Netherlands Institute in Morocco (NIMAR) in Rabat.

Through an open call, we gathered 13 participants from across various fields ranging from Islamic legal history and anthropology to gather fresh perspectives on how Islamic rules of adjudication can help us understand more precisely the juristic intent and adjudication process of Islamic legal norms in court.

The workshop agenda over two days is as follows:

This event was made possible through the financial support of the European Union’s Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action. We are especially grateful to Professor Léon Buskens, Director of NIMAR, and his local staff for hosting us and for assisting with the logistical arrangements for this event.

We are currently working closely with our participants to compile some of the works presented in this workshop in an upcoming special issue. Stay tuned for updates!
